St. Mary's Prayers and Squares ministry is a member of the interfaith outreach ministry called Prayers and Squares Ministry. Our ministry distributes quilts to the sick and troubled members of our parish family and extended family through friends in this parish. There is NO COST involved in requesting a quilt for a sick family member or friend. Each quilt is a very meaningful and special gift of love. The comfort these prayer quilts provide is visible in the faces of those who receive them.
The idea behind a prayer quilt is quite simple. A heavy thread is used to make stitches through the quilt layers with the ends left free to be tied with square knots. A silent prayer is said for someone in special need as each knot is tied. Each knot represents a prayer.
Our Prayers and Squares members make the quilts and meet once a month to pull threads through the finished quilts. These quilts are then placed outside of church after the Saturday and Sunday Masses for parishioners to say prayers and tie knots for the individual who will receive the quilt. This promotes prayer through the use of quilts. Our motto is: "It's not about the quilt; it's all about the prayers."
In addition to quilts, our ministry makes pocket squares for monthly distribution to anyone who would like one. A pocket square is a small quilt square with a string attached to tie a knot while you say a prayer. If you prefer, you may say a prayer for someone else and pass it along in the form of a tiny gift.
The ministry has many roles to fill. Most do NOT require sewing skills:
QUILT DESIGNERS - Sort the fabrics by colors or themes, choosing which fabrics will go together for a quilt.
QUILT ARCHITECTS - Cut the fabric into sizes determined by the chosen quilt pattern.
QUILT BUILDERS - Sew the fabric, create the quilt.
STRINGERS - Thread the floss through the quilt, making it ready for prayers.
QUILT SITTERS - Sit with the quilts after Masses and help parishioners tie the knots.
DELIVERY - Arrange for delivery of the prayer quilt.
